During the third week of August nearly 2000 young people from all over the world descended on Liverpool for Merseyfest. They camped in Croxteth park, going out in teams into the surrounding areas in the afternoon to work with local people on various community projects, joining with the churches for evening events of various kinds. One of the Kirkby Teams after an afternoon's work
Kirkby benefited from 4 teams who undertook a variety of work including clearing up the area around the brook in Southdene, work in the Millennium Park and at Mill Farm Youth Centre, the creation of gardens in Fairhaven sheltered Housing Complex and the M.A.C.E. building and work in elderly resident's gardens. During the evenings of that week the churches hosted a number of events culminating in a big concert at the Kirkby Suite starring the performing Arts dance Group and Liam Moore (Phil Collins impersonator). The teams of young people had a huge impact on the area and in many ways showed the church at it's best: working with other agencies for the good of Kirkby. Hopefully much of the good work and improved relationships can now be built upon in the months ahead. Return to News Index page |
